According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slipping and tripping is the single most common cause of major injury in UK workplaces. As a consequence of this, they have introduced guidelines that state a floor in a workplace must be suitable for the type of work activity taking place on it.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires floors to be suitable, in good condition, and free from obstructions, so that people can move around safely. And where a floor is likely to be subject to frequent contamination, people should still be able to walk on it without the risk of slipping.

The most common cause of injury

Statistics produced by the HSE show that as well as being the single most common cause of major injury, slipping and tripping is often the initiator of accidents attributed to other causes such as some machinery accidents, scalding and falls from height.

The top three non-fatal injuries to employees by most common accident type are as follows:

  • 29% Slip, trip or fall on the same level.
  • 22% Lifting or handling.
  • 10% Struck by an object.

When you look at these figures, it’s clear that the importance of safely flooring, particularly in heavily used areas, can’t be underestimated.

Is your flooring safe?

To avoid injury from slips on wet floors in commercial and industrial environments you should ensure that appropriate safety and non-slip flooring products are used.

In demanding working environments, including care and nursing homes, leisure and health centres, veterinary surgeries or educational facilities, it’s essential to ensure the safety of your workers and meet health and safety guidelines.

There are numerous types of flooring to choose from, and it’s worth assessing whether carpet tiles, safety flooring, non-slip flooring, linoleum or rubber is the most suitable option for your workplace.

Different types of safety flooring

Let’s take a look at some of the safety flooring options on offer.

Altro Safety Flooring is a PVC flooring that has a non-slip vinyl coating. Altro products are designed to be fitted in wet areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, changing rooms, storerooms, showers, wet rooms and clinical areas.
